Just recently I’ve made the observation that a lot of music in these past years have had very narcissistic lyrics. I was going to do a blog entry on it but this article put it better than I did and there are far more and better examples than I would’ve been able to list.
I do feel like adding my own part though.
If you go on the internet as often as I do, you will probably be too familiar with these two very overused terms, especially on sites like YouTube. If you dare criticise someone or something, especially music, you will be labeled as a “hater” and you will be told to “stop hatin’ on___” and so on.
The term “hater” has been around for a while, since the ’90s but it experienced an explosion of popularity in the recent years. It received wider usage in more than just hip-hop from the early ’00s, and now it is being used by every internet user and their brother. “Jealous” is also a common accusation thrown around like candy. People who criticise musicians for sub par skills are “haters” and are “just jealous”.
And don’t you forget the worst word.
Poor Mick Jagger is being used in more song lyrics today than in his heyday due to the heavy usage of “swagger”. “Swagger” means “style” and so many artists are bragging about their swagger.
And bragging about your “swagger” is a very narcissistic thing to do but it is being glamorize in music, especially hip-hop.
When “swagger” isn’t being used, rappers are just bragging about their “hoes” and their bodies and money.
I don’t know how to end this but I just wanted to add in a small part.
